The Chapbook

Familia

  • body
  • familia

They lay next to meThe both of themOne darkOne lightAnd I somewhere in BetweenTheir skin pressed up against the otherEach of us holdingThose parts of ourselvesThat needed to be heldIn that silenceI could hear their blood pumpAnd I wonderWhat does it mean to be family? Is familyThose with whom you shareAncestryAnd blood? Is familyThose with whom you shareSpiritAnd Narrative? Is familyThose people whoMake your soul singWith concertos of beautyWho still the cacophonyThat governs our lives? Is familythose people whoBirthed youRaised youHeld you when you scraped your kneeWho sweated, bled and cried so that youCould have a better life?Is familyThose with whom youAre rootedIn common struggleOr common land? But how great is the difference betweenThe blood that runs through my veinsAnd the blood that courses through my lover’s?Family is the blood that wechoose.
