The Chapbook

For Fierce Brown Mamas

  • body
  • race & colonization

Conflict mineralsAs ifThe diamonds that encrustedHer neckWere not paid for in bloodAs ifSomeone just argued over themAs ifThey weren’t clawed out of the Mother’s bellyBy fingers filthy with the gore of greed and madnessAs ifThere wasn’t a reason whyOur lands and our bodies continueTo be pillaged

She holds her baby tight to her bosomHopingThat the toxic fumes of colonialismAnd industrializationWon’t kill her childOrTransfigure it beyondRecognition

This is for all theFierce Brown MamasWho hold it downWho work two jobsAnd raise three kidsWho risk deportationAnd rapeWho push againstImagesOf the Welfare QueenOr The Neverending Strength ofBlack WomenThis is for those MamasWho giveAnd giveAnd giveSo that her future generations willThriveWho fightAnd fightAnd fightFor their family’sSurvival

This is for those Mamas who never had kids

This is for all of usWhose insidesWill never match our outsidesFor those of usThat are pursuedBy hearts filled withAvarice and fearFor those of usWhose glory is unmatchedSaved by the Sun

This is for those of usWho refuse to have ourStories and HerstoriesErased or rewrittenFor convenienceFor those of usWho refuse to be silencedFor those of us whoStand and FightWith glitter, fake eyelash andHigh HeelAgainst the pollution of ourSpirits

JusticeIs never simpleBut it isClean
