The Chapbook

I Want to Live

  • rage
  • love

I used to be gagged byFearMy mouth stuffed withThe white cloth of silenceStifling my screamsSometimes it felt like I was biting more than I could chewA constant, overwhelming, emptiness that filled my mouthOthertimes it felt like my very soul was being pulled outInch by agonizing inchTo be consumed and erased by those who sayI’m colorblind. Can’t was just love everyone?

And thenI looked up at the night skyAnd saw myself written in the starsI looked down at my feetAnd felt the fierce gentleness of my MotherI looked behind meAnd saw the many miles that my ancestors walkedI looked into my lover’s eyesAnd saw myself reflected in his loveHe reached into my heartEased the knot that constricted my spiritAnd my voiceBurst out fierce, blisteringly hot, and blazing with a powerThat moves to tearsAnd makes white supremacy uncomfortableA clarion call for revolutionA challenge that saysI won’t be silent any longer becauseSilences equals DeathAnd I want to live

She told me that she supported meBut that I was too angryAnd wouldn’t it be better for everyone if you just toned yourself down?I told herMy anger is a result of my experienceAnd wouldn’t it be better for everyoneIf you just gave back the land that you stole?
