The Chapbook

My Man

  • body
  • race & colonization
  • love

I could never marry a white manI’m too smartToo brownAnd too uppity. My man thoughHe is as blackAs the iced Americano I drink every morning2 shotsExtra sweetHold the creamBlackLike the space in betweenThe stars that bloom in my mindWhenever I enter himBlackLike the soft wetness inside of his mouth that I exploreWith my breathBlackLike the dilated pupil of my eye(Open with eagerness)As I lower my face to thatAmbrosial joy between his thunderous thighs

My manHe is toughLike the wild buffaloSurviving in spite of those who would commit genocide against the SacredToughLike the grass that grows between the cracks in the sidewalkThriving in spite of the crushing weight of manmade crueltyAnd cruel fate.My manHe is gentleLike the bracing waves of the warm CaribbeanThe clear waters belying a depth unsurpassed.GentleLike full moonlight filtering through a curtain of cloudsIlluminating the path before meThe dance of shadowExposing magic that I hitherto had not knownI had possessed.

My man isFiercely SensitiveI know he would go to the ends of the earthWalk along the bottom of the oceanAnd take the next flight off this planetTo plant a single kiss upon my brow.He would take out whole zipcodesCall in all favorsAnd rewrite reality itselfTo protect me from harm.

He loves me hard and true and pureA love that blazes like diamondsAnd burns like ice.A love that can make you cry and laugh and cumAll at the same time.A love that even the Gods are envious of.A love that heals. And I know he will love me untilThe cows he don’t haveCome home.He will love me till the sky fallsThe earth busts openAnd white people stop complaining about reverse racism.I know he will love meAs I love him.

They asked if he made me feel like I womanI replied, NoHe makes me feel human.
